Choosing instance types for your fleet
AccelByte Multiplayer Servers (AMS) provides a range of instance types, each with unique memory and CPU specifications. When choosing the most optimal instance type for your AMS fleet, consider the following:
Profile your game server's performance
To better understand your computing needs, profile your game server using the tools provided by your game engines. Not only does profiling give you an idea of your game server usage, it also allows you to optimize the game engine by ensuring that memory and CPU are being used as efficiently as possible.
Match VM types to DS requirements
Determine the resource (RAM and memory) requirements of your dedicated server so you can choose the most suitable VM type. AMS offers a range of machines depending on your needs:
- If your DS is memory-heavy, look at the memory-optimized MEX types. These VMs offer more memory than CPU.
- If your DS is CPU-heavy, look at the compute-optimized CPX types. These VMs offer more CPU than memory.
- If your DS has a balanced profile, try the general-purpose GLX types.
AccelByte recommends using the largest possible instance type without creating excessive buffers. Generally, it is more cost-effective to pack more DSes onto a large VM rather than running more smaller VMs with fewer DSes each.
